The S&P 500 Index headed for its sixth weekly advance in the past seven as strong economic data and a solid start to the corporate earnings season bolstered optimism. Chinese shares outperformed in Asia after a report showed the nation's economy soared in the first quarter.

Residential starts jumped 19.4% last month to a 1.74 million annualized rate, according to government data released Friday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey called for a 1.61 million pace.

China's economy strengthened in the first quarter of the year as consumer spending rose more than expected, putting it on course to join the U.S. as twin engines for a global recovery in 2021.
