Bonds & Stocks

Stocks are ending a volatile week on a relatively positive note after solid forecasts from tech heavyweights eased concern about the outlook for the industry that has powered the bull market. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%. The Nasdaq 100 rose 0.8%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%. The yield on 10-year Treasuries was little changed at 4.52%. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.3%.

Economy

The Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation remained muted in December, which should support further reductions in interest rates this year. The so-called core personal consumption expenditures price index, which excludes food and energy items, rose 0.2% from November and 2.8% from a year earlier, according to Bureau of Economic Analysis data out Friday.

World

President Donald Trump’s renewed pledges to slap 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico on Feb. 1  jolted foreign exchange markets late in the New York trading session, sending currencies from both countries plunging against the US dollar.
