Wall Street traders looking for signs of diplomatic efforts to revive the Strait of Hormuz left stocks near their all-time highs as oil prices continued to ease. The S&P 500 rose 0.2%. The yield on 10-year Treasuries was little changed at 4.94%.

Oil turned lower as Saudi Arabia sought to resume flows on a vital pipeline and traders weighed signs of diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Brent fell as much as 2.9%, before paring losses to trade near $98 a barrel.

President Donald Trump will defend his decision to start the war in Iran and step up military action in the Western Hemisphere when he speaks at the annual United Nations General Assembly event in New York later Tuesday.
